The patient who received 24 hours’ worth of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in 4 hours is at risk for several complications. The complication that could kill the patient is hyperkalemia that causes ventricular fibrillation. Continuous CP monitoring will alert the nurse to any EKG changes that indicate impending cardiovascular collapse. The EKG is a more definitive indicator of symptomatic hyperkalemia than the serum electrolyte panel. Once CP monitoring is initiated, the nurse can obtain serum electrolytes, blood glucose level, and the patient’s blood pressure.
