The patient with bright red drainage in the drainage bag of the continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) system is exhibiting signs of bleeding, which is not unexpected. Therefore, the most important assessment is the hemoglobin and hematocrit, which indicates if the rate/amount of bleeding is greater than the patient can tolerate. The platelet count and activated prothrombin time indicate the likelihood of the patient to clot appropriately, which is helpful, but since bleeding is expected after the procedure, the patient’s response is more appropriate. The patient’s urine output does not directly impact the bleeding.
