To ensure safety, morbidly obese patients should be helped into a sitting position leaning forward over a cushioned table or stool to open the intervertebral spaces. Although lateral recumbent positions are appropriate for lumbar punctures in patients with a normal BMI, obesity can make it difficult to determine landmarks in this position. Sitting upright is not the best position for an LP for any patient.
