By reviewing the intake and output of the continuous bladder irrigation (CBI) system, the nurse learns the patient’s urine output was 25 mL/hour for the previous 24 hours. The minimum urine output for the average patient is 30 mL/h; it should be even more for the patient receiving CBI therapy, if tolerated. Therefore, the nurse increases the patient’s fluid intake. Ensuring the patency of the CBI outflow tract is also helpful, but increasing fluid intake is most important. A loop diuretic is not the best option for the patient who likely has fluid volume deficit. Increasing the flow rate will not necessarily increase the patient’s inherent urine output.
