The nurse triages patient needs according to the ABCs – airway, breathing, circulation. The patient with pneumonia whose ventilator is alarming for high pressure may have occluded the endotracheal tube; this patient should be seen first to protect the airway. The patient receiving a blood transfusion who complains of new onset back pain and itchiness may be experiencing a transfusion reaction and is at risk for acute decompensation, so this patient should be seen next. Then, the patient receiving a norepinephrine infusion whose pump is alarming occluded should be seen next to ensure the patient is continuing to receive the medication. Finally, the bed alarm for the confused patient can be addressed.
