Most patients on mechanical ventilation are sedated. Sometimes this sedation is not sufficient, which can raise the patient’s level of consciousness and lead to agitation. The patient’s vital signs will change during agitation and pain (increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, increased patient-initiated breaths). Signs of agitation and/or pain could indicate the need for additional sedation and/or pain medication. The nurse should first assess that patient’s blood oxygenation before increasing FiO2. It is unclear whether the patient needs additional pressure support. Simply waking from sedation while on a ventilator does not necessarily indicate the patient is ready to be extubated.
