The small bowel is the site of most drug absorption. Patients should be prescribed agents that dissolve and absorb quickly like liquids and gelatin capsules. Enteric-coated or extended release preparations may not dissolve before they are excreted through the stoma. Patients with ileostomy can take soluble fiber to treat a high output stoma, but insoluble fiber should be avoided. Food blockage is a concern in patients with ileostomy. This can be avoided by taking small bites and thoroughly chewing food. Foods known to create blockages include coconut, mushrooms, certain vegetables, popcorn, fruit skins, and cased meats (i.e. sausage). Patients with ileostomy usually need to increase their fluid intake by 500 to 1200 ml a day.
