Teaching is effective when the client verbalizes that his diet should include carbohydrates such as vegetables, fruits whole grains, legumes, and dairy products instead of other carbohydrates that contain added fats, sugars, or sodium. Clients with diabetes should consume the same or more fiber and whole grains than recommended for the general public. Clients with diabetes should eat the same amount of saturated fat, cholesterol, and trans-fat as people in the general population. Evidence does not support the use of cinnamon, herbs, or other supplements for treatment of diabetes.
