The babies who are most at risk for rickets are exclusively breastfed African American babies. This is because there is very little vitamin D in human milk, which is involved in calcification of bone. Additionally, the heavily pigmented skin of African American babies decreases the amount of ultraviolet light that penetrates the skin and forms vitamin D. Therefore, exclusively breastfed African American babies are most at risk for rickets and should be the focus of a community presentation on rickets. Formula is fortified with vitamin D, so formula fed babies that are white or African American are at a lower risk than breastfed babies for vitamin D deficiency. Light-skinned individuals have more ultraviolet light penetration to make vitamin D in the skin.
