The parent is at risk for caregiver role strain and caregiver burnout. This can lead to additional problems such as child abuse, child neglect, and caregiver self-harm/suicide if not properly addressed. A social worker should be consulted to help find alternatives and support for the caregiver. The nurse may be able to help the parent identify family and friends who can support the care of the child. Respite care is a way for chronic caregivers to take short-term, time-limited breaks from care so they can attend to their own needs. Discussing adoption or encouraging the parent to simply persevere are inappropriate and unhelpful.
