Anosognosia is a condition in which patients lack awareness about their own mental illness. Anosognosia is quite common in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and is a major barrier to treatment. Hallucinations and delusions occur in patients with schizophrenia, but that is not likely at play in this instance. Hallucination is a sensory experience that is not actually taking place (e.g. seeing or hearing things that other people do not see or hear). The delusion is belief that is not based in reality or on rational thought. Confabulation is a symptom most often seen in people with long-term alcohol abuse. Confabulation is a memory disturbance in which a person produces distorted or misinterpreted descriptions about past experiences without a conscious desire to deceive.
