A person with a traumatic leg amputation is at high risk for hemorrhage and total blood volume extravasation. This is immediately and rapidly life-threatening and must be attended to as quickly as possible. Given the relatively young age of the patient with chest pain on exertion, this is unlikely to be a life-threatening event but should also be evaluated quickly. The same can be said for the person with lower back pain after motor vehicle accident. The patient should be evaluated for cauda equina syndrome (CES), but has less acutely severe injury than the amputee. Lastly, the compound fracture of the lower leg will need surgical attention but is not as emergent as the other cases.
