A cuff pressure of 20-30 cm H20 is appropriate and requires no intervention other than documentation. Cuff pressure that is too low can put patients at risk of aspiration; additional air should be added to the cuff to increase the pressure. On the other hand, cuff pressures that are too high can damage tracheal tissue. For instance, at pressure of 50 cm H2O and higher, there is total obstruction to blood flow to the tracheal tissues. The pressure should be decreased if found to be above 30 cm H20. Cuff pressure should be assessed regularly for chronically intubated patients (e.g. every 8 hours).
