Motivational interviewing is a way to acknowledge to the process of change in a way that positively changes behavior on the patient’s terms. Motivational interviewing includes four principles: expressing empathy and avoiding arguing, developing discrepancy, rolling with resistance, and supporting self-efficacy. The nurse helps the patient see the need for change, but the patient decides whether to change. The nurse remains non-judgmental and asks open-ended questions. Thus, asking the patient if she wants to change is the best choice. Referring to dangers of the habit is not an initial part of motivational interviewing. Asking about the patient’s support system minimizes their own self-efficacy and capacity to change on their own. Asking about what the patient likes about herself right now is off-topic and may reinforce the current behavior.
