Firearms in the home significantly increases the likelihood that the at-risk child will attempt suicide. Therefore, this parent should be educated on the importance of removing firearms from the home. A safe-handling course will not help to prevent suicide. Encouraging the child to work towards a long-time goal, adopt and care for a pet, and ensuring the child is not alone are all protective measures against suicide.
