Suctioning can be used to clear excess oral and nasal secretion, but it must be done safely. The head should be in a neutral position for suctioning—not hyperextended nor should the bed be tilted downward (Trendelenburg). A side-lying position is unnecessary. Suction near the gumline for less than 10 seconds at a time is a safe approach. The nurse should avoid applying suction for too long at any given position. Negative pressure (i.e. suction) should not exceed 120 mmHg.
