A patient who has tuberculosis should be on airborne precautions. In particular, they should be placed in an isolation room that has negative airflow pressure and an ultraviolet germicidal irradiation or high efficiency particular matter filter. The nurse should wear a personal respirator or N95 mask anytime they enter the patient’s room to prevent transmission. A surgical mask when examining or touching the patient (within 3 feet) is appropriate for droplet precautions but would not prevent an airborne infection like tuberculosis. Gown and gloves are appropriate for contact precautions to prevent transmission through physical contact with infected substances. It would not be enough to prevent transmission of tuberculosis. Finally, a full biohazard suit is only indicated when dealing with particularly virulent or serious pathogens. This level of protection is not required for a tuberculosis patient.
