The HPV vaccine is a Category B medication: it might be safe. For this reason, the nurse informs the expectant mother about the lack of evidence. Although it is true the AAP recommends that individuals who are pregnant not receive the vaccine while pregnant, this response does not address the mother’s fear for the safety of her unborn child. No further testing or intervention is necessary for this patient related to receiving the HPV vaccine while pregnant. During the first 8 weeks of gestation, the fetus is at the most (not minimal) risk for birth defects related to medications.
