Patients with ileus require nasogastric tube (NG tube) placement for decompression, not the administration of nutrients. With this clinical picture, the patient would either be NPO or would be limited to sips of clear liquids. Therefore, meals, even fully pureed ones, are not administered. The frequency also doesn't matter, as the patient isn't eating at all. Incidentally, the head of the bed should be between 30-45 degrees to prevent aspiration—not High-Fowler’s but semi-Fowler’s. If patients cannot tolerate enteral feedings, the patient will need TPN until GI function has normalized.
