This patient is displaying symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Mild symptoms may occur within 6 hours of alcohol cessation. Delirium tremens may occur 48 to 72 hours after cessation of alcohol intake. While the patient is admitted for COPD exacerbation, his oxygenation is fine, suggesting that the symptoms are not related to breathing problems. A benzodiazepine like lorazepam is a first line treatment for alcohol withdrawal. Antabuse is a drug meant to discourage alcohol use. While intravenous alcohol has been used to treat alcohol withdrawal, it is not that standard of care and is generally not used. It is difficult to titrate and causes adverse effects.
