Sleep pattern disturbance is a nursing diagnosis that describes any patient with sleep disturbance. The causes are many, but the goals of therapy are the same. Among them are refreshing sleep, consistent sleep (four hours is a common benchmark for restful sleep) and no reliance on sleep aids. The content and quality of dreams are not associated with sleep quality. Sleep onset should be about 10 to 20 minutes after trying. Falling asleep within 5 minutes suggests excessive sleepiness and is probably concerning.
