Autonomy is the individual’s right to make choices and take actions based on beliefs, values, and rationales. On the other hand, non-maleficence is the principle of preventing harm to others, in this case, the potential harm caused to the fetus. Beneficence is the principle of doing good and justice is fairness to all. These ideas are not in opposition and do not necessarily apply to this issue. Veracity is the principle of truthfulness and fidelity is the principle of faithfulness and loyalty. Again, these ideas are not in opposition and do not necessarily apply to this issue. Paternalism is the concept in which someone in authority blocks or impedes the autonomous functioning of someone else under the auspices of “doing the right thing.” Acquiescence is obliging someone reluctantly without necessarily agreeing. These two concepts should not apply to a discussion about abortion.
