Sickle-cell disease is a condition characterized by abnormally-shaped, rigid, and dysfunctional red blood cells causing circulatory problems, such as anemia, stroke, dehydration, infection, and bouts of pain (sickle-cell crisis). The nurse caring for a patient who is experiencing sickle-cell crisis must understand the priority management for crisis is pain relief. An immediate administration of analgesia is important in order to minimize the risk of developing chronic pain syndrome. Monitoring blood pressure and treating anemia are also important goals in sickle-cell crisis, but pain management is more critical during crisis. Hydration is also an essential nursing consideration.
