Inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) is metabolized extremely quickly; any disruption in the flow will cause a prompt decompensation due to rebound pulmonary hypertension. Therefore, the nurse first checks gas tubing connections to ensure the patient is receiving the medication as ordered. A sedative might be necessary if the patient experiences a desaturation while still receiving the iNO. Prone positioning can improve oxygenation but is not the first action by the nurse. The patient might need increased ventilatory support, but the nurse must first ensure the patient is receiving the iNO.
