Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) is a group of conditions characterized by joint inflammation affecting children under 16 years. There are several subtypes of JRA including polyarticular, pauciarticular and systemic JRAs. Children with JRA suffer joint pains, swelling and stiffness that usually last for more than six weeks. Fever must be present for at least 2 weeks. Lymphoblastosis and thrombocytopenia suggest acute lymphocytic leukemia, which can cause joint pain and arthritis. Management for JRA includes pharmacologic treatment, counseling, nutrition, physical therapy and coordination with the patient's school.
