Bipolar disorder, formerly referred to as manic-depressive illness, is a psychiatric condition characterized by alternating periods of profound depression and elation. Currently, there is no surgical treatment specifically indicated for bipolar disorder, unlike before when prefrontal lobotomy was performed. The drugs of choice for bipolar disorder include benzodiazepines and valproate for manic periods and other antipsychotic drugs for mixed periods. Electroconvulsive therapy is one of the treatment modalities for bipolar disorder indicated when the risk of other modalities are greater or per patient request. It is recommended for patients with bipolar disorder to engage in a regular exercise plan.
