Side effects from chemotherapy are impossible to predict for any individual patient. The most appropriate response is to acknowledge her anxiety, provide realistic education, and provide any appropriate assurances that will address her concerns. Focusing on the treatment of the side effect, while an appropriate step, does not address the patient’s anxiety. Saying that the side effects will be minimal or that the patient will be able to handle the side effects is not appropriate since the nurse cannot make those assurances.
