Preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM) refers to the rupture of the amniotic sac before 37 weeks of gestation. At 32 weeks gestation with PPROM, the patient and fetus are at risk for infection. The risk of infection is associated with the early rupture of membranes. Fetal demise would be more likely before 23 weeks gestation. The mother is at risk for oligohydramnios, not polyhydramnios. Extremely low birthweight is a term used to describe a neonatal weight of less than 1000 grams, and generally occurs among neonates born at less than 28 weeks gestation.
