The patient who is vomiting must frequently test his or her blood glucose levels and administer insulin accordingly, even if they are unable to tolerate eating or drinking. Although blood sugar may be low from lack of food, the patient’s stress hormone levels will be elevated due to illness, which will elevate blood glucose levels. This makes the patient’s blood sugar difficult to predict. Therefore, it must be tested frequently to avoid precipitating diabetic ketoacidosis, which is a life-threatening emergency. It is not appropriate to tell the patient to wait until able to eat solid foods to use insulin. Patients with type 1 diabetes do not generally take oral hypoglycemics, they use insulin. High-calorie soft drinks are not appropriate for a patient with type 1 diabetes.
