The elderly patient is at an increased risk for dehydration due to the removal of the colon – where a significant portion of water is reabsorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. This is further compounded by the relative decrease in total body water of the older adult. The patient also requires care to prevent bleeding, uncontrolled pain, and DVT, but these are not specific to an older adult patient who undergoes colon resection.
