Patient characteristics that increase the risk for falls include a positive fall history and requiring a walker or other device to ambulate, among others. Hypotension, not hypertension, increases the risk for falls. Incontinence, rather than constipation, increases the risk for falls. The patient with neurologic impairment is at an increased risk for falls; the patient alert and oriented to person, place, time, and situation is normal.
