The patient complaining of flank pain and pruritus after the initiation of a blood transfusion is exhibiting signs of a transfusion reaction. This patient is at risk for circulatory collapse and must be assessed immediately. The patient complaining of excess sleepiness after the morning insulin dose should have the blood sugar checked, but since the patient can speak to report the sleepiness, this patient can wait. The patient reporting swelling and redness proximal to the intravenous catheter in the arm is exhibiting signs of an IV extravasation; this patient should be assessed quickly as well, but this is less urgent than a transfusion reaction. The patient who has surgery scheduled in one hour and has not received preoperative teaching is not the nurse’s priority.
