The patient unable to speak following a bee sting is experiencing an anaphylactic reaction that has compromised the patient’s airway; therefore, this patient is treated first. The mnemonic ABCDE (airway, breathing, circulation, disability, exposure) is used in emergency departments to successfully triage patients. The patient with a respiratory rate of 8 following an opioid overdose can be treated next as clear breath sounds indicate a patent airway but the opioid overdose has decreased the patient’s respiratory drive. The patient with acute appendicitis and a 4 second capillary refill time should be seen next as this patient’s circulation is compromised. The patient with C4 SCI maintains control over the diaphragm and is able to breathe, as evidenced by a 92% oxygen saturation on room air.
