The child is exhibiting signs of an allergic reaction with angioedema. However, the patient is still able to talk and is breathing, so the patient is not yet in immediate danger (e.g. anaphylaxis). Oral diphenhydramine is administered immediately to help decrease histamine release and prevent worsening angioedema or anaphylaxis. Since the child has adequate ventilation to speak and is conscious, CPR is not appropriate. Reviewing the child’s record for allergies delays treatment. If diphenhydramine controls the patient’s symptoms, emergency services are not needed, but close observation is needed. The patient’s parents need to be contacted.
