The patient who has benzodiazepine toxicity that has been taking benzodiazepines for two years requires supportive management. This patient is experiencing significant respiratory depression, so this patient would likely need endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation; oxygen via nasal cannula would be insufficient. Although flumazenil is used to treat benzodiazepine toxicity, administration to a patient who has been taking benzodiazepines regularly would likely precipitate benzodiazepine withdrawal which is more dangerous than benzodiazepine overdose (as long as the patient is supported). Naloxone is used in opioid toxicity.
