Staphylococcal skin infections are spread by contact with infectious material. (i.e. pus, bandages). MRSA requires contact precautions. Patient should be in their own single room if possible and gloves and a gown should be worn by all healthcare personnel who enter the room. Universal precautions are simple (i.e. handwashing) and are not an appropriate level of protection for MRSA. Droplet precautions are effective for infections by things such as influenza or an upper respiratory infection, but do not guard against MRSA. Airborne precautions are effective against airborne pathogens organisms, but this level is not appropriate protection against MRSA.
