The tripod position, in which the patient is sitting and leaning forward at the waist with the trunk supported, forces the diaphragm down and allows for greater expansion of the chest. It is an important non-pharmacologic treatment strategy to teach patients with COPD to help them breathe more easily. The prone, high-Fowler’s, and reverse Trendelenburg positions are not helpful for patients with COPD.
