The patient with spinal cord injury at or above T6 that occurred less than 12 weeks ago is at risk for autonomic dysreflexia due to neurogenic bladder. Terazosin may be prescribed as prophylaxis for autonomic dysreflexia, which works through inhibition of the urinary sphincter. Although terazosin can also be used as an antihypertensive, this patient is receiving it to prevent autonomic dysreflexia. Terazosin is used to treat detrusor hyperreflexia (not hyporeflexia), which contributes to autonomic dysreflexia. Antihypertensives such as terazosin can cause orthostatic hypotension as a side effect; they are not used to prevent it.
