Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is clinically defined as the presence of at least two manifestations after discontinuing or limiting alcohol intake. These manifestations include sweating, tachycardia, hand tremors, nausea and vomiting, anxiety, hallucinations and illusions. Benzodiazepines, such as clonazepam and lorazepam, are the drugs of choice in managing the symptoms of AWS, as well as in preventing its progression. Disulfiram is indicated for aversive therapy for alcohol dependence. Methadone is used for opioid withdrawal, while naloxone is an antidote for morphine overdose.
