Whiteness at the back of the eye of a neonate is a sign of retinoblastoma; the treatment is enucleation, or surgical removal of the eye. This is done to prevent the spread of the cancerous cells to other parts of the body. Whiteness observed at the front of the eye of the neonate indicates congenital glaucoma; this is treated with either a goniotomy or trabeculotomy. Laser surgery of the retina is indicated for retinopathy of prematurity, which presents as altered vascularization of the retina.
