Following a bone marrow transplant, the patient experiences bone marrow suppression. This places the patient at risk for thrombocytopenia and leukopenia. The most concerning symptom is a distended, guarded abdomen that is hard to the touch – this indicates internal bleeding and can be fatal if not appropriately addressed. A fever and tachycardia indicate infection, but this will kill the patient more slowly than untreated abdominal bleeding. Bleeding gums and conjunctival hemorrhage after coughing indicate thrombocytopenia; however, these are not life-threatening symptoms like a board-like abdomen. Tachypnea and diminished right upper lobe breath sounds indicate pneumonia; this needs to be addressed but is less of an emergency than a board-like abdomen.
