Calcium alginate is used in the treatment of stage IV pressure injuries to promote a moist wound bed for granulation tissue formation and reepithelialization. The patient’s stage II pressure injury would actually worsen with the moisture. Therefore, this is an inappropriate action; a hydrocolloid dressing would be more appropriate. The student nurse would be correct to encourage a high-protein diet, utilize positioning aids to ensure the patient does not sit directly on the coccyx, and coordinate with the unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) to check the patient for incontinence episodes every hour.
