Most children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) will have delays in reaching motor milestones that persist throughout life. This delay is most apparent during childhood and early adolescence because of rapid growth and development during this time. DCD is diagnosed in children between 6 and 12 years of age, usually. Once diagnosed, the disease is not progressive but it does affect patients throughout their lifespan. There is no increased mortality or shortened lifespan associated with DCD. Typical features of DCD include clumsiness, incoordination, balance abnormalities, and difficulty walking. Treatment largely rests with occupational and physical therapists. DCD has also been called clumsy child syndrome, mild motor delay, motor learning difficulty, developmental dyspraxia, among other names.
