The first step in a urinary catheter irrigation is to perform hand hygiene and don clean gloves. This prevents contamination of the solution, syringe, or access port. Then, a hospital-approved antiseptic swab is used to clean the access port. Once the port has been cleaned, the nurse draws 60 mL of sterile saline into a sterile syringe. Performing this after the port has been cleaned decreases the opportunity for contamination of the syringe tip. The nurse then clamps the tubing, attaches the syringe to the infusion port, instills the solution, removes the syringe, and unclamps the tubing to allow the solution and urine to drain.
