A nurse is legally responsible to confirm the correct medication and dosage prior to administration. The six rights of medication administration are right client, right route, right drug, right dose, right time, and right documentation. The nurse can be legally liable for errors made in these steps if they lead to patient harm. The nurse should check for allergy (insulin allergy is very rare, but does happen). However, the nurse is not legally responsible for giving a drug that causes a reaction to a person without a known allergy to the substance. It is inappropriate to check with anyone other than the mentally competent, adult patient. The nurse is not required to provide medication alternatives.
