Phototherapy for bilirubinemia should be provided nearly constantly, but pauses for important things such as breastfeeding are allowable and will not interfere with treatment. Indeed, breastfeeding should be encouraged during this time. Parenteral nutrition would not be provided unless needed for another reason besides hyperbilirubinemia. Phototherapy is not a contraindication to oral feeding. It isn't necessary for the mother to feed the baby while sitting under the phototherapy lights.
