Slurred speech may indicate the onset of stroke. The Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale is a fast and effective way to assess for stroke. It can be remembered with the mnemonic FAST. F stands for Facial droop, A is Arm drift, S stands for Speech impairment (and T is Time to call 9-1-1). Patients with one of three of these findings have a 72% probability of having an ischemic stroke. Patients with all three findings have a greater than 85% probability of having an ischemic stroke. Ventricular fibrillation generally presents with collapse. Myocardial infarction presents with crushing chest pain. Pulmonary embolism presents with sudden onset dyspnea.
