The patient with right-sided hemiplegia due to a cerebrovascular accident (CVA) most likely sustained the CVA due to a coagulopathy. Therefore, the patient is at increased risk for further thromboembolism that could cause a myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, or another CVA, all of which are immediately life-threatening and thus the priority of preventative measures. Thromboembolism are more life-threatening than a deep vein thrombosis because the thromboembolism enters circulation and can cause deadly vessel occlusion in the heart, lungs, or brain. The deep vein thrombosis is less dangerous because it remains in place. However, it has the potential to become an embolus, so it must be avoided as well. The patient is at risk for aspiration pneumonia due to dysphagia and UTI due to immobility and inability to fully empty the bladder. However, aspiration pneumonia, UTI, and deep vein thrombosis are at a lower priority than preventing venous thromboembolism.
