The patient is exhibiting signs of an air embolism, which could have occurred if the IV bag ran dry and the pump continued to infuse air or if the integrity of the tubing was compromised, allowing air to enter. The patient’s symptoms are not consistent with fluid volume overload, which would be assessed by auscultating breath sounds and assessing for the presence of periorbital edema. Palpating the limb proximal to the IV is the appropriate assessment when the patient reports pain at the infusion site.
