Type II pneumocytes are responsible for the production of surfactant, which decreases surface tension in the alveoli and prevents collapse. Destruction of type II pneumocytes leads to alveolar collapse and atelectasis. Destruction of type II pneumocytes occurs in alveolar-capillary membrane disruption and pulmonary edema. Lung remodeling occurs after both types of cells begin to regenerate.
